We don’t always think of skin as an organ, but it is in fact our largest organ. Your skin has many roles, including acting as a barrier to the outside world, protecting you from infection, regulating your body temperature, and manufacturing vitamin D. Plus, let’s be honest…it looks good when it’s glowing and healthy. [Not really a function, but certainly a perk!]

In the last post, I talked about how the foundation of any good skin care plan is what you eat and I shared with you the staples in my diet keeping my skin young looking and healthy. This week I’ll share with you some of my absolute favorite skin care products!

Before I share my favs, it’s important to know why I’m so selective about which products I use…

First and foremost, products need to work, otherwise what’s the point? They also should be healthy and not filled with harsh chemicals. I want my skin care products to support my healthy life, not work against it.

According to an article by Harvard University’s T. H. Chan School of Public Health, Americans are “exposed to more than a hundred chemicals from cosmetics, soaps, and other personal care products before leaving the house in the morning. While people may assume these products are safe, their chemical ingredients are mostly untested and largely unregulated, with even known carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting chemicals still found in some formulations. What’s more, ingredient labels can be misleading, leaving even the savviest consumers in the dark about the safety of the products they use every day.”

This is why I feel it’s so important to use care when choosing your skin care products.

The first tool that I cannot live without is the Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep database. They’ve done all the research for you on over 60,000 personal care products and have scored them based on the safety data they have on each ingredient. I use this site all the time and love their smart phone app that lets you scan a product on your phone when you’re in a store and get an instant product rating. They also have a EWG Verified product seal that lets you know that a particular product meets their strict criteria for safety.

Face wash Osmia Organics Black Clay Facial Soap. I love this company! Locally made in Carbondale CO, founder Sarah Villafranco, MD left her job as an ER physician to start this company. They use consciously sourced, high quality ingredients and their products are simple but so EFFECTIVE! This soap is so gentle and non-drying yet I really feel like my face is clean after using it. I use it morning and night.

Vitamin C serumJohn Masters Organics Vitamin C Anti-Aging Face Serum. This product is a game changer for me! My dermatologist has always recommended topical vitamin C for its anti-oxidant properties and collagen promoting qualities. There are TONS of vitamin C serums on the market and I think I may have tried them all. Truthfully, I never really thought they were doing much good until I tried this. I was skeptical to buy this one at first as it’s price so well compared to other brands so I figured there’s no way it could work. But my friends at my favorite skin care store Vert Beauty encouraged me to try and I’m so glad I did. Within a few weeks my skin looked visibly brighter, smoother, and healthier. I don’t think any other product I’ve ever tried has had such a dramatic effect on my skin, and I’ve tried TONS of products. I doubt I will ever stop using it. I encourage everyone to try it! For the price, you really can’t go wrong.

Eye Cream Tammy Fender Awakening Eye Gel. When it comes to eye gels and creams I’ve struggled with being loyal to a brand or product. In the past I can’t say that I’ve ever been “wowed” about a product like I was with John Masters Vitamin C serum and these tiny little bottles always cost so darn much! I was beginning to think that I just have to accept that I’m getting older and there’s nothing I can do about those crow’s feet, until I discovered this product! While in LA a few months ago, I visited The Detox Market and took home a sample. Just a small amount of this gel (which is more like a cream) made such difference! It’s super light and hydrating and I feel like it’s plumping up those pesky fine lines. This product is on the pricier side but it lasts FOREVER and works so well that I think it’s worth every penny.

Moisturizer Osmia Organics Purely Simple Face Cream. Hands down this is one of my absolute favorite products to use. First of all, I cannot even explain how good this smells. The scent of the essential oils in this moisturizer make me feel like I’m getting a decadent and relaxing spa treatment every time I put it on. This comes as no surprise because the word Osmia was chosen by the creator of the line to mean sense of smell. This moisturizer is heavy enough to keep my skin hydrated in the dry cold Denver winter but light enough to use in the summer as well. I use it morning and night.

SPFCoola Facial SPF 30. Not all sunscreens are created equal. Some are misleading in their labeling about how well they actually protect against sun damage and some contain harmful ingredients. If you are interested in learning more check out the Environmental Working Groups Eight Little Known Facts About Sunscreen article. They put out an annual guide to help consumers choose the best sunscreens. This sunscreen gets the highest rating of 1. I like it because it is not at all greasy and is light enough to wear daily under my makeup.

I hope you love these products as much as I do! Enjoy.
